Baby Milestone Tracker

Tick off your baby's developmental milestones by age, grouped the way doctors do, across social, language, thinking and movement skills. A milestone is something most children (about 75%) can do by a given age, so it is a guide, not a test. Your progress is saved on this device.

When to talk to a doctor (act early)

Children develop at their own pace, but speak to your doctor or polyclinic, and ask about a developmental check, if your child:

  • Loses a skill they once had, at any age (the most important sign).
  • Is not meeting milestones across several areas.
  • Has no babbling, pointing or gestures by around 12 months.
  • Has no single words by around 16 months, or no two-word phrases by 2 years.
  • Is not walking by around 18 months.
  • Does not respond to their name, make eye contact, or smile socially.

WHO movement milestones (age ranges)

Big motor skills appear across wide but predictable windows. These are the ages by which most children (the 1st to 99th percentile) reach each one, from the World Health Organization.

SkillTypical age range
Sitting without support3.8 - 9.2 months
Standing with help4.8 - 11.4 months
Crawling on hands and knees5.2 - 13.5 months
Walking with help5.9 - 13.7 months
Standing alone6.9 - 16.9 months
Walking alone8.2 - 17.6 months

Source: WHO Motor Development Study. About 1 in 25 children never crawl on hands and knees and that is fine.

Developmental checks in Singapore

Every child gets a Child Health Booklet at birth, which records growth and the four areas of development at recommended developmental screening checkpoints from birth to about 5 years, done at polyclinics and clinics. If a delay is suspected, your polyclinic or paediatrician can refer your child to the KKH Department of Child Development or NUH for a fuller assessment. Bring the booklet to appointments, and use corrected age for premature babies.

Acting early makes a real difference, support and therapy work best when started young, so never feel you are "making a fuss" by asking.

Frequently asked questions

What is a developmental milestone?

It is a skill that most children (about 75%) can do by a certain age, such as smiling, sitting or saying first words. Milestones are grouped into social and emotional, language, thinking, and movement skills. They are a guide, not a pass-or-fail test.

My baby hasn't hit a milestone, should I worry?

Not necessarily, there is a wide normal range. Watch the overall picture across all areas. Do speak to your doctor if your child loses a skill, is behind in several areas, or you simply have a gut feeling something is off.

How do milestones work for premature babies?

Use your baby's corrected age (counted from the due date, not the birth date) until about 2 years old, since they had less time to develop. Tick the premature box above for a reminder and a link to the corrected-age calculator.

When should my baby start walking?

Most children walk alone somewhere between about 8 and 18 months, so there is a very wide range. If your child is not walking by around 18 months, mention it to your doctor.

What if my baby was born early or has a health condition?

Development can take a different path. Use corrected age, follow your paediatrician's guidance, and lean on the KKH or NUH child development teams if you have been referred.

Is this tracker a diagnosis?

No. It is an educational guide based on CDC and WHO milestones. Only a doctor can assess your child's development. Use it to spot what to watch and to start a conversation with your doctor.

Milestones here are from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2022 revision, the age by which about 75% of children reach each skill) and the World Health Organization. This is general information, not a diagnostic tool or medical advice. If you have any concern, talk to your doctor or polyclinic.
