What MediSave covers for childbirth

The MediSave Maternity Package lets you (and your spouse) pay for delivery from your MediSave accounts, within these limits:

Delivery withdrawal

  • Normal delivery: up to $1,120
  • Caesarean: up to $2,380
  • Complicated caesarean: up to $2,440

Plus, also claimable

  • Pre-delivery care (scans, tests, consults): up to $900
  • Daily ward charges: a per-day MediSave limit applies (check the current figure on CPF)
  • Both the mother's and father's MediSave can be used

Important: MediShield Life does not cover a routine delivery or a caesarean operation, so do not count on it for the birth itself. It does automatically cover your newborn from birth, including for certain serious conditions. If you want private-hospital maternity cover, that usually needs separate private insurance arranged before pregnancy.

Government support that offsets the cost

Having a baby in Singapore comes with substantial support. Every newborn citizen gets a MediSave Grant for Newborns of $5,000 (for births on or after 1 April 2025), which goes into the baby's MediSave to help with healthcare and MediShield Life premiums. On top of that, the Baby Bonus Cash Gift and Child Development Account can add well over ten thousand dollars. Work out your full entitlement with our Baby Bonus, CDA & cost estimator.

Don't forget antenatal (prenatal) costs

Your delivery bill is only part of the picture. Across the pregnancy you will also pay for checkups, scans and tests:

  • Public hospital antenatal care: roughly $700 to $1,000 in total.
  • Private gynae: roughly $2,000 to $4,000 in total (first visit around $200 to $350, follow-ups around $120 to $200).
  • Add-on tests: first-trimester screening (OSCAR) around $300 to $400, NIPT around $1,200 to $1,400, the detailed anomaly scan around $280, and the glucose test (OGTT) around $20 to $50.

Much of your antenatal care can be paid from MediSave (up to the $900 pre-delivery limit).

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to give birth in Singapore?

For a Singapore Citizen, a normal delivery ranges from around $1,350 in a subsidised public ward to about $6,000 in Ward A and roughly $10,800 in a private hospital. A caesarean costs more, from about $2,600 (public, subsidised) to around $15,800 (private).

How much of the delivery can MediSave cover?

You can withdraw up to $1,120 for a normal delivery or $2,380 for a caesarean, plus up to $900 for pre-delivery care and a daily limit for ward charges. Both parents' MediSave can be combined.

Does MediShield Life cover my delivery?

No. MediShield Life specifically excludes routine maternity and caesarean charges. It does cover your newborn from birth, including for certain serious conditions. For private maternity cover you would need a separate private plan arranged before pregnancy.

Is my baby's bill included?

No, your newborn is billed separately for their own stay (and any care such as phototherapy or special-care nursery). The $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns helps offset this.

Do PRs and foreigners pay more?

Yes. Government ward subsidies in public hospitals are largest for Singapore Citizens, smaller for PRs, and do not apply to foreigners, who pay unsubsidised rates closer to private levels. Private-hospital prices are the same regardless of residency.

Can I use my husband's MediSave?

Yes. The MediSave Maternity Package allows both the mother's and the father's MediSave to be used, which effectively doubles the delivery withdrawal limit if needed.

How much cash should I budget?

After MediSave, a subsidised public delivery can cost little to a few hundred dollars in cash, while Ward A or a private hospital can leave several thousand to over ten thousand dollars to pay. Use the calculator above for your situation, and keep a buffer for antenatal care and your baby's bill.

Cost figures are from the Ministry of Health's published bill benchmarks and CPF's MediSave rules, current as of June 2026. Actual bills vary by hospital, doctor, length of stay and any complications. This is a general guide, not a quote, and not financial advice.
