26 weeks pregnant: back pain, safe massage and the OGTT
In this article
At 26 weeks pregnant your baby's eyelids open, KKH says, and with the retina developed, your baby can technically see. Backache is common by now, as you and your baby both get bigger. KKH's planner suggests treating yourself, within a few safety rules for massage and spa treatments.
Your baby at 26 weeks
The eye lens can now be seen, and images your baby captures are sent to the brain to be processed. Brain waves are active too, KKH says, and your baby can process what it senses and respond.
Easing back pain safely
A massage is a good way to rest tired muscles, KKH says. Its rules for a prenatal massage or spa visit:
- no massage of the tummy or breasts
- no relaxation oils, which may set off contractions
- no treatments that raise your body temperature, such as a sauna, steam room or hot tub
KKH explains the heat rule: too much heat raises your core temperature, which can harm your baby's developing spine and brain. A warm bath or shower, not too hot, eases muscle tension instead. Our guide to prenatal massage in Singapore covers timing, what to tell the therapist and prices.
Share the load
KKH's planner suggests handing some jobs to your partner, such as cleaning hard-to-reach places or the cat's litter box. Doing things together helps too: reading up, going to the obstetrician together, getting ready for the baby and talking about his role at the birth. When to go to the hospital
Regular or painful tightening, leaking fluid, bleeding, calf pain or swelling, or pre-eclampsia signs such as a severe headache, blurred vision or sudden swelling need the hospital now.
Where to go: at KKH, if you're 22 weeks or more with leaking fluid, bleeding or signs of labour, head directly to the Delivery Suite on Level 2 of the Women's Tower. NUH's Delivery Suite is Ward 22, Level 2 of the Main Building. Other hospitals have their own, so find out where yours is before you need it.
