Under 7: Singapore Integrated 24-Hour Activity Guidelines for Early Childhood (January 2022). 7 and up: the guidelines for Children and Adolescents (January 2021). Both from the College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Academy of Medicine Singapore, hosted by KKH.
The early childhood guidelines count naps in the daily total for babies and say older preschoolers may not need a nap if they sleep enough at night. They also ask for a consistent bedtime on weekdays and weekends, and a dark, quiet room at a comfortable temperature.
Questions parents ask
How much sleep does a preschooler need in Singapore?
The Singapore Integrated 24-Hour Activity Guidelines for Early Childhood give 10 to 13 hours a day for children aged 3 to 5, and 9 to 11 hours at age 6, with screens off an hour before sleep.
What time should a Primary 1 child sleep?
Work back from the wake-up time: at 6 years the guidelines give 9 to 11 hours, and from 7 to 13 years at least 9 hours. A child waking at 6.15am needs to be asleep by 9.15pm for 9 hours.
Do naps count?
For babies the guidelines count naps in the daily total. For toddlers and preschoolers they give a daily total, and say older preschoolers may not need a nap if they sleep enough at night, so enter any naps and the calculator takes them off the night.
