Since 1 April 2025, all 4 weeks are yours by law. Before that, only 2 weeks were, and the other 2 depended on your boss. It's also now an offence for an employer to dismiss you while you're on paternity leave.

How many days is 4 weeks?

Multiply 4 weeks by the days you work in a week, up to 6. A 5-day week gives you 20 working days. A 6-day week gives 24. If you work 7 days, it's still capped at 24.

When you can take it

ArrangementHow
Default (no agreement with employer)4 weeks in one continuous block, starting no earlier than the birth, finishing within 16 weeks of the birth
With your employer's agreement4 continuous weeks any time in the first 12 months, or split into days and taken in any mix
Self-employed4 weeks, continuous or not, within 12 months of the birth

Who qualifies

  • Your baby is a Singapore citizen, or becomes one within 12 months of birth. You can only take the leave once the baby is a citizen.
  • You were married to baby's mum at some point between conception and birth, or you marry her within 12 months of the birth. If it's the second, you take the leave after the wedding.
  • Employees: at least 3 continuous months with your employer right before the birth. Self-employed: at least 3 months in your trade, and you lose income during the leave.

Under 3 months in the job? Your employer can still choose to give you the leave, and MSF will reimburse them. If your contract ended or you were retrenched, you may get the Government-Paid Paternity Benefit instead.

Who pays

Your employer pays you during the leave, then claims it back from the government. The government covers all 4 weeks, capped at $2,500 a week or $10,000 in total. Self-employed dads claim lost income on the GPL portal, within 3 months of the last day of leave.

Worked example

Baby due 1 December 2026, dad works 5 days a week and earns $7,000. He gets 4 weeks, or 20 working days. To start on the due date, he should tell his boss by 3 November 2026. If they can't agree a plan, he takes it in one block that must finish by 22 March 2027. With his boss's OK, he can spread it until 30 November 2027.

His weekly pay is $7,000 x 12 / 52, about $1,615, which is under the $2,500 cap. So the government funds the full 4 weeks, about $6,462. He also gets 5 weeks of shared parental leave by default, so 9 weeks at home in total.

Making the most of it

  • Babies don't keep to due dates. Give notice early, with a range of start dates.
  • The first 2 weeks home from hospital are the hardest. Many dads take paternity leave then and keep shared leave for later.
  • Plan with mum. Use our shared parental leave planner to split the 10 shared weeks and see both of your end dates.
