Buying a car for your family in Singapore: costs, loans and car seats
In this article
Buying a car for your family in Singapore starts with the COE. LTA's latest exercise closed on 4 November 2026 at $139,001 for Category A and $132,334 for Category B. Put an example car with a $30,000 OMV through LTA's taxes and the COE, and it comes to $209,351 before the seller's own costs. MAS lets you borrow up to 60% of that, over 7 years at most.
How to buy a car for your family, step by step
- Count the trips you'd drive in a normal month, and price them on public transport and booked rides. The Ministry of Transport says ride-hail platforms must let you ask for a child seat when you book.
- Work out which COE category the car falls in: LTA puts non-electric cars up to 1,600cc and 97kW, and fully electric cars up to 110kW, in Category A, and the rest in Category B.
- Check the latest result on LTA's COE bidding page before you sign. Bidding opens on the first and third Monday of each month and runs for 3 working days.
- Set your cash first, because MAS caps a car loan at 60% of the price when the OMV is above $20,000 (70% at $20,000 or less), for 7 years at most.
- Work out the ARF from the car's OMV with LTA's tiers, then check its VES band. For cars registered in 2026, LTA takes $22,500 off for band A and adds up to $35,000 for band C3.
- Check the car fits your family: rear seats with ISOFIX points, room for car seats side by side, a boot that takes your folded stroller, and rear child locks.
- Fit your own car seats in the car before you pay. The Traffic Police say every child below 1.35m must be secured in an approved child restraint.
- Budget the yearly running costs on top of the price. LTA says every car needs motor insurance that at least covers third-party liability for deaths and bodily injury.
- Plan for the full 10 years of the COE. For a COE won now, LTA's PARF rebate falls from 30% of the ARF to 5% as the car ages.
What one family car costs upfront
Here's one example car, worked out with LTA's tax structure. It's an example, not a typical car or a quote: a 1,500cc petrol car with a $30,000 OMV, in VES band B, with a Category A COE from the 4 November 2026 exercise. Singapore Customs sets each car's OMV, so ask the seller for the real one.
| Cost item | How it's worked out | Source |
|---|---|---|
| OMV | Example figure: $30,000 | Singapore Customs, via LTA |
| Registration fee | Flat $350 | LTA tax structure |
| ARF | $20,000 x 100% + $10,000 x 140% = $34,000 | LTA tax structure |
| Excise duty | 20% of $30,000 = $6,000 | LTA tax structure |
| VES, band B | $0 for 2026 | LTA emissions schemes |
| COE, Category A | $139,001 on 4 Nov 2026 | LTA COE results |
| Total | $30,000 + $350 + $34,000 + $6,000 + $139,001 = $209,351 | Sum of the rows |
The seller's price also covers costs LTA doesn't set, so read $209,351 as the floor for this car. MAS counts taxes and the COE in the price its loan limit applies to. At 60%, the most you could borrow on $209,351 is $125,610.60, so you'd pay at least $83,740.40 in cash.
Buying an electric car? LTA's EEAI takes up to 45% off the ARF, capped at $7,500 for cars registered in 2026. It ends after 31 December 2026.
The yearly costs and the 10-year sum
LTA's road tax for a petrol car of 1,001cc to 1,600cc is [$250 + $0.375 x (cc - 1,000)] x 0.782 for every 6 months. For the 1,500cc example that's $437.50 x 0.782 = $342.125, or $684.25 a year. Electric cars pay by motor power instead, plus a $350 flat component every 6 months, and LTA's road tax calculator works out any car from its engine capacity and age.
HDB's Tier 1 rate, for a resident household's first car, is $80 a month at a surface car park or $110 at a sheltered one, outside its special precincts. A second car pays Tier 2, from $90 to $190 depending on the car park. See HDB's season parking page for your block.
ERP charges only apply on weekdays, LTA says, and never at weekends or on public holidays. LTA also puts the fuel excise duty a typical petrol car user pays at about $1,000 a year.
Now spread the example over its 10-year COE. If you deregister it at 10 years, LTA's PARF rebate is 5% of the $34,000 ARF, which is $1,700.
| Line | Sum |
|---|---|
| Upfront government costs | $209,351 |
| Less PARF rebate at 10 years | $209,351 - $1,700 = $207,651 |
| Spread over 10 years | $207,651 / 10 = $20,765.10 a year |
| Road tax | $684.25 a year |
| HDB surface season parking | $80 x 12 = $960 a year |
| Total a year | $20,765.10 + $684.25 + $960 = $22,409.35 |
| Total a month | $22,409.35 / 12 = $1,867.45 |
The sum leaves out ERP, which depends on your routes, and the costs LTA doesn't set: petrol, servicing, motor insurance and any loan. Add your own quotes. Deregistering earlier changes the sum. At 5 years, LTA's rules give back 30% of the ARF, $10,200, plus half the COE: $139,001 x 60 / 120 = $69,500.50.

Which COE category, and when to buy
Category A isn't always the cheaper one: in the 4 November 2026 exercise it closed at $139,001, above Category B's $132,334, and every winner in a category pays that same price. LTA updates the COE quota every 3 months. It's also consulting the public on changes to how cars are split into categories.
If your bid wins, LTA says the temporary COE for Categories A and B is valid for 6 months. The year you register the car decides its VES figures. For 2027, LTA lists $20,000 off for band A and up to $45,000 extra for band C3.
If you mostly drive on weekends, price a Revised Off-Peak Car too. LTA says a new ROPC gets up to $17,000 off its COE and ARF, and up to $500 off road tax a year. In return you can't drive it from 7am to 7pm on weekdays that aren't public holidays, though Saturdays have no limit and a $20 e-Day Licence covers any one restricted day.
Check the car fits your children
The Traffic Police say every child below 1.35m in a motor vehicle must be secured in an approved child restraint, and that failing to do so is an offence. Older British and Japanese standards stop being approved from 1 January 2031, so check the sticker on any seat you're handed down. Our car seat guide covers the stages by age and KKH's newborn car seat loan.
Take your car seats and stroller along when you view the car, and check:
- How many rear seats have ISOFIX points, and which ones.
- Whether two or three car seats fit side by side with the doors shut.
- Whether your folded stroller fits in the boot with the shopping. Our stroller guide lists fold sizes.
- Child locks on both rear doors.
If grandparents ride with you, count their seat too. Our multigenerational household budget guide covers sharing the costs.
Is a car worth it with young kids?
Put the example's $1,867.45 a month beside what you spend on getting around now. As an example only, say your rides cost you $600 a month: the car's government share alone would then be $1,867.45 - $600 = $1,267.45 more each month, before petrol and the rest of the running costs.
If you don't buy, LTA says children below 0.9m ride the MRT and buses free with a fare-paying adult. Our guide to the MRT and buses with a stroller has the rest of the rules.
Taxis are exempt from the car seat rule because they're street-hailed, the Ministry of Transport says. You can still bring your own seat into a taxi or a private hire car, or ask for a car with a child seat when you book a ride-hail trip.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a family car cost in Singapore?
For the example car here, the government's share is $209,351 upfront: a $30,000 OMV plus $350 registration, $34,000 ARF, $6,000 excise duty and a $139,001 COE. Spread over 10 years with road tax and HDB parking, it's $1,867.45 a month before petrol and the other running costs. Redo the sums with your car's real OMV.
How does the COE for a family car work?
You bid in Category A or B, and LTA says a winning COE lets you register and use the car for 10 years. Exercises run twice a month, and every winner in a category pays the same price. After 10 years you deregister the car or renew at the PQP, which LTA says is the moving average of COE prices over the last 3 months.
What are the car loan rules in Singapore?
MAS lets you borrow up to 60% of the purchase price if the car's OMV is above $20,000, or 70% if it's $20,000 or less. The longest loan is 7 years. These limits apply to agreements from 30 October 2026, and the price includes taxes and the COE.
What is the car seat law in Singapore?
Every child below 1.35m must be secured in an approved child restraint, the Traffic Police say, and it's an offence not to. ECE R129 is on the approved list. Taxis are exempt, but you can bring your own seat. Our car seat guide shows which seat suits which stage.
Is it worth buying a car with kids in Singapore?
Do the sum for your own trips. In the example here, the government's share alone is $1,867.45 a month over 10 years. Compare that with what you spend on public transport and booked rides, then add petrol and the other running costs to the car side. If you mostly drive on weekends, price an off-peak car too.
