Family photoshoot locations in Singapore: permit rules, the best light and how to avoid the crowds, place by place
In this article
The best family photoshoot locations in Singapore for a relaxed session are the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay's outdoor gardens, Marina Barrage's green roof, East Coast Park and Punggol Waterway Park. Permits are the part most families miss. The Botanic Gardens says casual family portraits need no submission, and Gardens by the Bay welcomes personal photography, but NParks requires a free permit for all commercial photography in its other parks, and bans props, confetti and flash under that permit. For light, shoot in the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset; on 12 October 2026 the sun rose at 6.48am and set at 6.53pm. Below: each location's permit rule, hours and crowd notes, light times through the year, and tips for shooting with babies.
Family photoshoot locations at a glance
| Location | Hired photographer: permit? | Hours | Crowds and rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore Botanic Gardens | Casual family portraits need no submission | 5am to midnight daily | Free entry; go early on a weekday |
| Gardens by the Bay, outdoor gardens | Personal shoots welcome; commercial shoots need approval | 5am to 2am daily; the domes 9am to 9pm | No tripods on weekends and public holidays, or in Floral Fantasy |
| Marina Barrage green roof (PUB) | A permit or approval for commercial shoots | Public areas and the green roof open 24 hours | No crowd guidance from PUB |
| East Coast Park (NParks) | NParks permit for commercial photography | 24 hours | NParks asks permit holders to shoot on weekdays off-peak |
| Punggol Waterway Park (NParks) | NParks permit for commercial photography | 24 hours | As above |
| Labrador Nature Park (NParks) | NParks permit; the nature reserve section is reviewed strictly | 24 hours; reserve section 7am to 7pm | Use the nature park side, not the reserve |
| Jewel Changi Airport | Application needed for wedding and commercial shoots | Rain Vortex 10am to 10pm daily | No crowd guidance from Jewel |
| Haw Par Villa | Shoots by email arrangement | Park closed since 8 December 2025; Hell's Museum open 10am to 6pm | Skip it for outdoor photos for now |
Hours and rules come from each venue's own website, read on 12 October 2026. Street spots such as Tiong Bahru and Chinatown are public roads with no permit page; be considerate of residents and shopfronts. Our family guides to the Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Barrage and East Coast Park list the toilets and parking.
Permit rules for hired photographers
Taking your own photos in a park needs no permit. The rules kick in when you hire a photographer, because the venues treat paid shoots as commercial photography.
NParks parks
- NParks says a permit is required for all filming and commercial photography in its parks and nature reserves, and there's no application fee.
- NParks' permit page says to apply at least 1 month before the shoot, while its photography page says at least 2 weeks; plan on a month to be safe.
- Under the permit you can't use props, throw confetti or flower petals, use flash, or set up equipment other than a tripod.
- NParks asks permit holders to shoot on weekdays at off-peak times and keep the crew small.
- Whether a paid family session counts as commercial isn't spelled out, so ask your photographer whether they've applied, or check with NParks.
Rules at other venues
- Singapore Botanic Gardens: casual photography sessions such as family portraits and graduations don't need a submission.
- Gardens by the Bay: photography for personal memories is welcome, but commercial shoots need prior approval, applied for at least 14 days ahead, and tripods aren't allowed on weekends and public holidays.
- Marina Barrage: PUB requires a permit or prior approval for commercial filming and photography on its premises.
- Jewel Changi Airport: wedding, commercial and media photography needs an application.
- Drones: Gardens by the Bay bans them; don't plan drone shots without checking each venue's rules.
The best light for family photos
Singapore's sunrise and sunset barely move through the year, so the golden slots are predictable. Book the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset, when the light is softer and the heat is lower.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Shoot window to book |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 October 2026 | 6.48am | 6.53pm | About 6.50am to 7.50am, or 5.50pm to 6.50pm |
| 1 February 2027 | 7.16am | 7.20pm | About 7.15am to 8.15am, or 6.20pm to 7.20pm |
| 1 July 2027 | 7.02am | 7.14pm | About 7am to 8am, or 6.15pm to 7.15pm |
Times are from timeanddate.com for Singapore. Civil twilight on 12 October 2026 ran from 6.27am to 7.14pm, which gives a little extra soft light either side. Midday sun means squinting toddlers and hard shadows, and SingHealth advises keeping babies under six months out of direct sunlight, so save the noon slot for indoor spots such as Jewel or a studio.
Avoiding the crowds
- Choose a weekday. NParks asks permit holders to shoot on weekdays off-peak, and Gardens by the Bay bans tripods on weekends and public holidays.
- Both the Botanic Gardens and Gardens by the Bay's outdoor gardens open at 5am, so a sunrise shoot beats the morning joggers and tour groups.
- Large parks have more than one good backdrop, so ask your photographer to scout a quieter second spot.
- Have a rain plan. Agree a backup date, or an indoor option, before you book.
Paid exclusive slots
Gardens by the Bay sells options for families who want a guaranteed quiet setting. Its personal photoshoot package costs $188 nett and includes 4 adult tickets to 2 attractions, a buggy ride and 2 hours of parking. An exclusive one-hour, pre-opening shoot in one dome costs $697.60 on a weekday and $1,308 on weekends and public holidays, prices it lists after a discount, so check the current rate.
Tips for shooting with babies and toddlers
- Book around naps and meals, not the other way round. A fed, rested toddler gives you more smiles than the perfect light.
- Bring water, snacks, wipes and a change of clothes for each child, and a fan for the stroller; our guide to stroller accessories covers the useful ones.
- Keep babies in the shade between shots, in light clothes, and use the stroller canopy rather than a cloth over the seat.
- Plan 3 or 4 setups at most. Short walks between spots keep children happy; long ones don't.
- For a newborn, a home or studio session is easier than a park; see our guide to newborn photographers.
