How much weight should I gain in pregnancy?

Recommended weight gain depends on your pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). The widely used Institute of Medicine ranges suggest that a woman in the healthy-weight range gains about 11.5 to 16 kg over a single pregnancy, with smaller gains advised if you started in the overweight or obese range and a little more if you were underweight. Singapore clinicians often use Asian BMI cut-offs, which this tool applies.

Why steady gain matters

Most weight is gained in the second and third trimesters, often around 1 to 2 kg in the first trimester then roughly half a kilogram a week after that for a healthy-weight mother. Gaining too little or too much can affect you and your baby, which is why your gynae tracks it at antenatal visits. For local food and eating tips, see our guide to eating well in pregnancy, and read about gestational diabetes if you have been advised to watch your weight.

This calculator gives general guidance only and is not medical advice. Recommended weight gain varies by individual and pregnancy. Always discuss your target with your doctor or midwife.
