Recommended total gain
How much weight should I gain in pregnancy?
Recommended weight gain depends on your pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). The widely used Institute of Medicine ranges suggest that a woman in the healthy-weight range gains about 11.5 to 16 kg over a single pregnancy, with smaller gains advised if you started in the overweight or obese range and a little more if you were underweight. Singapore clinicians often use Asian BMI cut-offs, which this tool applies.
Why steady gain matters
Most weight is gained in the second and third trimesters, often around 1 to 2 kg in the first trimester then roughly half a kilogram a week after that for a healthy-weight mother. Gaining too little or too much can affect you and your baby, which is why your gynae tracks it at antenatal visits.
