10 weeks pregnant: weight gain targets and NIPT in Singapore
In this article
At 10 weeks pregnant your baby is about 3.1cm long, much bigger than a 50-cent coin, KKH says. This is the last week your baby is called an embryo. You may have put on a little weight, and your tops may feel tight across the chest, so it's a good week to look at how much you should gain.
Your baby at 10 weeks
- The limbs are long and bend at the elbows and knees.
- The webbed fingers and toes are separating.
- The face looks more human.
- The major organs are in place, though some are immature and not working yet.
- The embryonic tail is almost gone.
- The neck is developing, HealthXchange adds.
Your baby weighs under 15g. By the end of pregnancy, KKH says, babies weigh 2.5 to 3.5kg on average. From next week, your baby is called a foetus.
How much weight should you gain?
KKH's guidance depends on your BMI before pregnancy:
| Your BMI before pregnancy | KKH's weight gain target |
|---|---|
| 18.5 to 24.9 (normal) | 10 to 15kg |
| Above 30 | 5 to 9kg |
KKH's page gives only these two bands, so ask your doctor for your target if your BMI is under 18.5 or between 25 and 30. Our pregnancy weight gain calculator works out a range from your height and pre-pregnancy weight.
You don't need to eat for two. KKH says you need only about 300kcal a day extra, and pregnancy isn't a time to lose weight, even if you're overweight.
Where does the weight go? KKH's planner gives rough figures for the end of pregnancy: your womb weighs about 1kg, the placenta about 700g, body fluids including the amniotic fluid about 3.5kg, and your breasts 800g or more.
What's due in Singapore at 10 weeks
- NIPT can be done from 10 weeks, if you've chosen it. It's a blood test for placental DNA, and KKH says it picks up about 99% of Down syndrome cases.
- First trimester screening: the scan is done from 11 weeks to 13 weeks 6 days, and the blood test from 9 weeks. Book the scan if you haven't.
- CVS, if your doctor recommends it, is typically done between 10 and 14 weeks.
- Your dating scan and booking blood tests, if you haven't had them. The dating scan window closes at 12 weeks.
- The flu vaccine, if you haven't had it. KKH says it can be given safely at any stage.
Looser tops and a better-fitting bra help as your body changes. Our pregnant belly guide covers when the bump usually starts to show.
When to call the hospital
KKH's warning signs in pregnancy are vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, painful contractions of the womb, chest pain, dizziness or feeling faint, shortness of breath, headache, calf pain or swelling, and tiredness far beyond the usual.
KKH's Urgent O&G Centre, at Basement 1 of the Women's Tower, takes walk-ins 24 hours a day for early pregnancy problems such as pain and bleeding. Under 16 weeks, if the bleeding is minimal or the pain is mild, its Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit can see you the same or next working day by appointment. If you're booked with another hospital, call its O&G clinic or go to its emergency department.
