22 weeks pregnant: where to go in an emergency changes
In this article
At 22 weeks pregnant, the top of your womb has reached your belly button, KKH says, and your baby's eyelids have begun to separate. In Singapore there's one practical change this week: at KKH, from 22 weeks, leaking fluid, bleeding or signs of labour go straight to the Delivery Suite, and the Urgent O&G Centre is no longer the place to go.
Where to go from 22 weeks
KKH's Urgent O&G Centre handles acute problems in pregnancies under 22 weeks. From 22 weeks, KKH asks you to go directly to its Delivery Suite, at Level 2 of the Women's Tower, for:
- water-bag leakage
- vaginal bleeding
- signs of labour
If you're driving, KKH says the nearest parking to the Delivery Suite is at the Women's Tower, Pink Zone, with the lift lobby beside the Delivery Suite on Level 2. By taxi or private hire, get dropped at the Women's Tower and take the lift or escalator up. Midwives there decide whether you go into a delivery room or see a doctor in triage first.
At NUH, the Delivery Suite is Ward 22, Level 2 of the Main Building. At any other hospital, ask at your next visit where to go and save the number.
Your baby at 22 weeks
The eyelids are starting to separate, though your baby can't see yet. What your baby can do is react to changes between light and dark. KKH explains that seeing takes more than eyes: images have to reach the visual centre at the back of the brain to be processed and recognised.
Stretch marks, cramps and darker spots
- Stretch marks may appear now, usually blue, purple or pink. They fade to pale white after delivery.
- For leg cramps and swollen feet, KKH suggests putting your feet up in the evening and doing gentle stretches.
- Existing moles and freckles may darken. A good sunblock stops them getting darker.
Our guide to reducing stretch marks covers what helps and what doesn't.
What's due in Singapore at 22 weeks
| Week 22 at a glance | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Trimester | Second trimester |
| Your baby | Eyelids separating; reacts to light and dark |
| Emergency route | KKH: Delivery Suite, Level 2, Women's Tower, from 22 weeks |
| Vaccine | Whooping cough window open, 16 to 32 weeks |
| Coming up | Glucose test (OGTT) for gestational diabetes at 24 to 28 weeks |
| Watch for | Pre-eclampsia signs and preterm labour |
When to go to the hospital now
Go now for leaking fluid, bleeding, or regular tightening or period-like cramps, which KKH says can be early labour. Seek help at once for pre-eclampsia signs: severe headache, blurred vision, pain in the upper right side of your tummy, or sudden swelling of the face, ankles or feet.
From 22 weeks, KKH asks you to go straight to its Delivery Suite, at Level 2 of the Women's Tower, for water-bag leakage, vaginal bleeding or signs of labour. At NUH, the Delivery Suite is Ward 22, on Level 2 of the Main Building. Booked somewhere else? Go to your own hospital's delivery suite, or call its O&G clinic if you're unsure.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I go if my water bag leaks at 22 weeks?
At KKH, straight to the Delivery Suite on Level 2 of the Women's Tower. At NUH, the Delivery Suite is Ward 22, Main Building Level 2.
Can my baby see at 22 weeks?
Not yet. KKH says your baby can react to light and dark, but seeing needs the brain to process images, which develops later.
Why are my moles getting darker?
Pigment changes are common in pregnancy, KKH says. Sunblock helps stop them darkening further.
