The clearest sign it is time for the transition from cot to bed is a toddler who can climb out of the cot. Singapore's ECDA requires childcare centres to move children out of cots and onto mattresses once they can climb out, and a fall from cot height is what you are trying to prevent. Other signs are a child who has outgrown the cot, asks for a "big bed", or is being toilet trained and needs to get up at night, though no official guidance sets a right age. Before the move, make the room safe (locked window grilles, anchored furniture, no blind cords near the bed), use a low bed or a mattress on the floor with a guard rail fitted flush to the headboard, keep the old bedtime routine, and expect a week or two of your child getting out of bed. In Singapore, IKEA sells junior beds from S$129 and a guard rail at S$29.90.

Signs your toddler is ready for a bed

There is no official age for moving out of a cot in Singapore. Use your child's behaviour and size instead.

Wait if

Until the move, keep the cot mattress on its lowest setting. HealthHub says to lower it as soon as your baby can sit up, to prevent falls.

Make the room safe before the move

A toddler in a bed is a toddler free to explore at night. KKH's Children's Emergency sees about 28,700 injured children a year, and more than half of the injuries come from falls. For head injuries in children aged two and under, KKH says almost 90% happen at home and up to half in the bedroom, with falls from adult beds a common cause.

Plug socket covers, a stair or door gate if your child could wander, and a night light also help. Our baby proofing checklist covers the rest of the home.

Which bed: floor mattress, junior bed, cot bed or full-size bed

You have four common options. A low bed is safer than a high one while your child learns to stay in it.

Moving from cot to bed, step by step

  1. Talk about it first. Read a book about big-kid beds and let your child help choose the sheets.
  2. Set up the bed where the cot was, so the room feels the same, and keep it away from the window.
  3. Fit the guard rail flush against the headboard, and check the gap to the wall.
  4. Keep the routine exactly the same. SingHealth suggests a 10-minute warning before bedtime, then a toilet trip and teeth, and letting your child take a favourite toy or blanket to bed.
  5. Keep bedtime at the same time as before. SingHealth says most toddlers sleep nine to ten hours a night, with a bedtime around 8pm to 9pm, plus one or two naps.
  6. Start with naps or bedtime, whichever goes better in your house, and stick with it rather than switching back and forth.
  7. Set one clear rule: stay in bed until morning. SingHealth says bedtime resistance affects 10% to 30% of preschoolers and is helped by clear rules about staying in bed and not calling out.
  8. If your child calls or gets up, return them to bed calmly. SingHealth suggests waiting a little longer each time before answering, checking without turning on the light or picking them up, and praising your child the next morning for staying in bed.
  9. Give it two weeks before deciding it is not working.

Pillows and soft bedding can come in once your child is in a bed; SingHealth advises keeping them out of the cot until age one. Our baby sleep schedule tool shows typical sleep by age, and our sleep training guide covers settling methods.

If your child falls out of bed

A low bed and a guard rail make falls rare and usually minor. Comfort your child and watch them closely for the next day or so. HealthHub says signs of severe brain injury usually show within 72 hours.

Go to a children's emergency department, or call 995, if after a fall your child: becomes unconscious or unresponsive, vomits again and again, walks unsteadily, has blood or clear fluid from the ears or nose, or has a seizure or unusual movements (HealthHub). KKH also lists drowsiness, lethargy, unusual quietness and persistent irritability as signs that need emergency care. NUH's Children's Emergency, on Level 1 of its Main Building, is open 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What age should a toddler move from a cot to a bed?

There is no official age. Move when your child can climb out of the cot, which is ECDA's rule for childcare centres, or when they outgrow it.

Do toddlers need a bed rail?

A guard rail helps stop falls in the first months. IKEA recommends its rail from 18 months and says it must sit flush against the headboard with no gap.

Is a floor bed safe for a toddler?

A mattress on the floor gives the lowest fall height. Keep it away from walls and furniture where a child could get trapped, and away from windows and cords.

How do I keep my toddler in their new bed?

Keep the same bedtime routine, set one clear rule about staying in bed, and calmly return your child each time they get up. SingHealth suggests praising them the next morning when they stay in bed.

How much does a toddler bed cost in Singapore?

On sellers' own pages in October 2026, IKEA's junior beds cost S$129 to S$179, extendable beds S$189 to S$389, a junior mattress S$90 and a guard rail S$29.90. Cot beds at Mothercare SG started at S$599.
