Family planning in Singapore for a second or third child comes down to three things: whether you both want it, how far apart you'd like your children, and what the money and leave look like. KKH's obstetricians say there's no right or wrong answer on spacing, and that couples should weigh their finances, their wellbeing and each other's preferences. The money rules change soon: until March 2027 the Baby Bonus pays more for later children, from $20,000 in total for a first child to $32,000 for a third or fourth. From April 2027 the new SG Child Support Package gives every Singapore citizen child the same support whatever their birth order. Leave is the same for each child, except that the government pays all 16 weeks of maternity leave from the third child. Use our baby cost calculator to put your own numbers in.

The partner conversation: questions to talk through

Many couples avoid the topic until one of them brings it up at a bad moment. Pick a calm evening, after the baby is asleep, and talk it through with these questions:

  • Do we both want another child, and roughly when? If one of you isn't sure, what would help you decide?
  • How are we coping now? Are we sleeping, and is the relationship in a good place?
  • Who will look after a second child, and can our current arrangement stretch to two?
  • What happens to each of our jobs during another pregnancy and the first year?
  • Can we afford it, and what would we cut back on?
  • How big do we want our family to be in the end?

KKH's advice, via HealthXchange, is to consider practical things such as your financial position, your wellbeing and each other's preferences before trying again. If you disagree, set a date to talk again in three or six months instead of deciding on the spot.

Spacing: how far apart?

HealthXchange, writing with KKH's O&G team, says there's no absolute right or wrong in spacing children, and that both closer and wider gaps have pros and cons.

Children closer togetherChildren further apart
Your bodyLess time to recover between pregnanciesKKH says you get time to recover and rebuild nutrient stores such as calcium and iron
Daily lifeKKH notes you'll need more energy to care for two little ones at onceMore time with each child alone in the early years
MoneyOverlapping childcare years; hand-me-downs still fitCosts are spread out; you may need to buy baby gear again
SiblingsClose in age, so often into the same thingsAn older child understands more and can help a little

There is a number, though. SingHealth's preconception care guide on HealthXchange says that if you've had a previous pregnancy, an optimal gap of about 18 to 24 months is required between pregnancies. It also says to allow enough time to get any long-term condition well controlled, and to lose at least 5% of your weight first if you're overweight. Here's what Singapore's hospitals say about the gap in different situations:

AfterWhat Singapore's hospitals sayOur guide
A vaginal birthAn optimal gap of about 18 to 24 months between pregnancies (SingHealth). Fertility can return within weeks, so use contraception until you're ready (KKH)Getting pregnant while breastfeeding
A caesareanNo separate figure on Singapore hospital pages, so the same 18 to 24 months is a fair guide; ask your O&G. If you'd like a vaginal birth next time, SingHealth says it can be an option after one lower-segment caesarean, with a scar rupture risk of under 1%C-section in Singapore
A miscarriageTry again when you both feel ready; your period usually returns in 4 to 6 weeks, and some couples wait for it to make dating easier (SingHealth)Trying again after a miscarriage
A stillbirthA 3% chance of it happening again, and test results can help plan the next pregnancy (SingHealth)Pregnancy after stillbirth
A complicated birthA preterm baby, heavy blood loss or a long recovery: ask your obstetrician how long to wait for your own situation-

Spacing also changes the money and the leave. If two children will overlap in infant care or childcare, budget for both fees at once with our childcare subsidy calculator. For leave, check your next maternity leave with the maternity leave calculator and your partner's with the paternity leave calculator. If a child born after 1 April 2027 falls under the new SG Child Support Package, the support no longer depends on birth order, as the table further down explains.

HealthXchange says fertility can return within weeks of giving birth, and that breastfeeding only protects you if you're fully breastfeeding, your period hasn't returned, and your baby is under six months. Most women get pregnant within six months of stopping contraception. Our guide to sex after giving birth covers the contraception options KKH lists while you decide. If you've tried for a while without success, our guide to secondary infertility explains when to get help.

What another child costs in Singapore

The biggest ongoing cost for most families is care. At the 2026 National Day Rally, the Prime Minister said families can pay nearly $600 a month for full-day childcare and more than $1,000 a month for infant care, and set a target of $150 and $300 a month. He also said it will take a few years to get there.

Delivery is the other big bill. MediSave can pay up to $900 for pre-delivery medical expenses, between $1,120 and $2,770 for the delivery procedure, and up to $1,130 a day for the first two days in hospital, CPF says. Every Singapore citizen baby born from 1 April 2025 also gets a $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns.

LifeSG says Child Credits of $2,000 a year go to Singapore citizen children turning 1 to 16 from 2026 onwards, with payouts starting from April 2027. The Prime Minister put the total direct support at almost $70,000 for every Singaporean child as they grow up. These figures were announced in August 2026, so check LifeSG for the final details before you rely on them. Our Baby Bonus calculator and our guide to Baby Bonus and family support go through the payments.

The 2026 National Day Rally announced more childcare leave by family size: 8 days with one child aged 12 and below, 10 days with two, and 12 days with three or more. MOM's page notes the increase is coming but hasn't given a start date yet. Our maternity leave and shared parental leave calculators work out your dates, and our guide to maternity and paternity leave explains the rules.

Tax reliefs that grow with each child

IRAS sets two benefits by birth order:

  • Working Mother's Child Relief, for children born or adopted from 1 January 2024: $8,000 for the first child, $10,000 for the second, and $12,000 for the third and later.
  • Parenthood Tax Rebate: $5,000 for the first child, $10,000 for the second and $20,000 for the third and each later child.

Our parenthood tax rebate guide and parent tax relief calculator show how these work against your income tax.

This guide is general information, with figures read from LifeSG, MOM, MSF, CPF, IRAS and the Prime Minister's Office on 11 October 2026. Schemes change at each Budget and National Day Rally, so check the official pages before you plan around a number.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best age gap between children?

KKH's obstetricians say there's no absolute right or wrong, but SingHealth's preconception guide puts the optimal gap between pregnancies at about 18 to 24 months. A wider gap gives your body time to recover, while a closer gap means more energy needed in the early years. If your last birth was complicated, ask your obstetrician how long to wait.

How much Baby Bonus do I get for a second child?

For a second child born before 1 April 2027, LifeSG lists $23,000 in total Baby Bonus support. Children born on or after 1 April 2027 come under the SG Child Support Package, which gives every child the same support regardless of birth order.

Is there more support for a third child?

Until April 2027, yes: the Large Families Scheme adds a $10,000 CDA First Step Grant, a $5,000 MediSave grant and $1,000 a year in LifeSG credits for third and later children born from 18 February 2025. Maternity leave is also fully government-paid from the third child.

Do I get more childcare leave with more children?

Not under today's rules, which give each parent 6 days a year regardless of the number of children. The 2026 National Day Rally announced 8, 10 or 12 days depending on how many children you have, with the start date still to be confirmed.

How soon can I get pregnant after giving birth?

HealthXchange says fertility can return within weeks. Use contraception until you've decided, and talk to your doctor at the six-week check about timing.

How do we decide whether to have another baby?

Talk through whether you both want it, how you're coping now, who will look after the children, your jobs and your budget. KKH suggests weighing finances, wellbeing and each other's preferences, and there's no wrong answer.

How long should you wait between pregnancies?

SingHealth's preconception guide says about 18 to 24 months between pregnancies is optimal. After a miscarriage you can try again when you feel ready; after a caesarean or a complicated birth, ask your O&G.
