Hypnobirthing in Singapore is a birth preparation course, not a form of hypnosis you go under. Thomson Medical describes it as breathing techniques, guided relaxation, visualisation and mindset work that help you stay calm in labour, with your birth partner given an active role. Its own course runs over five Saturday afternoons and costs $790 per couple including GST, plus $50 for materials. Private teachers run small group and one-to-one classes too, and Birth Discovery suggests starting between 25 and 29 weeks. What it can do: help you feel less afraid and more in control, and possibly rely less on pain relief. What it can't do: promise a pain-free or natural birth. It works alongside an induction, an epidural or a caesarean, and you can still ask for medical pain relief at any point.

What you learn in a hypnobirthing course

SkillWhat it's for
Deep breathing and relaxationStaying calm and present through each stage of labour
Visualisation and self-hypnosisQuietening your mind and easing tension in your body
Comfort techniques and positionsWorking with your body to manage discomfort, and moving in labour
Your birth partner's roleGiving them practical ways to support you, not just hold your hand
Medical pain relief optionsKnowing how epidurals and pain relief injections work, so you can choose in the moment

These topics come from Thomson Medical's course outline. The "hypnosis" part is deep, focused relaxation you practise during pregnancy, so that slow breathing and calm become automatic when contractions start. It isn't being put under: you stay aware, and you can talk to your midwife and make decisions as usual.

Prices were read on each provider's own page on 11 October 2026. Group classes usually cost less than private ones, Bliss in Birth notes, while private sessions can be fitted around your schedule and your particular worries. Before you book, ask how many sessions there are and how long each one is, whether your partner's place is included, whether there's a refresher if your baby comes early, and what the teacher's training is.

A hospital antenatal class is a separate thing: it covers labour, breastfeeding and newborn care, and many parents do both. Our guide to antenatal classes in Singapore compares what KKH, NUH, SGH and the private hospitals teach and charge, and our doula guide covers continuous support in labour.

What hypnobirthing can and can't do

It canIt can't
Make you feel calmer and less afraid in the weeks before the birth (see our guide to fear of giving birth)Guarantee a pain-free birth
Give you breathing and relaxation tools to use in every stage of labourPromise a natural birth, or prevent an emergency caesarean
Possibly reduce how much pain relief you need, says Thomson MedicalReplace your doctor's or midwife's advice if something changes
Help with a planned induction or caesarean, as well as a vaginal birthStop you from choosing an epidural or other pain relief
Give your partner a clear job during labourWork without practice; the techniques need rehearsing at home

If labour takes a different turn, the breathing still helps: Thomson Medical says the techniques are useful whether you're planning a natural delivery, an induction or a caesarean. SingHealth lists the medical options you can add at any time, including Entonox (gas and air, which you breathe through a mask and which acts within a few breaths), pethidine injections and an epidural. Our guide to epidurals and labour pain relief explains each one, and a birth plan is a good place to write down which you'd like to try first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does hypnobirthing cost in Singapore?

Thomson Medical's five-session course costs $790 per couple including GST, plus $50 for materials. Private teachers set their own fees and most don't publish them, so ask each one.

When should I start hypnobirthing?

Birth Discovery suggests starting between 25 and 29 weeks, which leaves time to practise. Later classes can still help, right up to the end of pregnancy.

Does hypnobirthing work with an epidural or a caesarean?

Yes. Thomson Medical says the breathing and relaxation techniques help with a natural birth, an induction or a caesarean, and you can still have an epidural.

Is hypnobirthing the same as being hypnotised?

No. It's deep, focused relaxation you practise in pregnancy. You stay awake, aware and in control during labour.

Does hypnobirthing reduce labour pain?

It may help you feel more in control and possibly need less pain relief, Thomson Medical says, but it can't promise a pain-free birth.
