Direct School Admission (DSA-Sec) lets your Primary 6 child get a secondary school place in Singapore through a talent, before the PSLE results are out. You apply on MOE's DSA-Sec Portal in May, and it's free. Schools hold trials, and the allocation comes out with the PSLE results in November. A child who takes up a DSA place stays at that school, so apply only to schools your child would be glad to attend.

How to apply for DSA-Sec, step by step

  1. Talk it over with your child in P5 and early P6. MOE asks you to make the call together. Look hard at what your child enjoys and is good at, then at what each school's programme can build on.
  2. Shortlist schools between January and May of P6. MOE's SchoolFinder shows each school's DSA talent areas. Schools update their own websites by late April, MOE says.
  3. Note each school's trial dates. Every school sets its own criteria and timetable, and trials take up your child's time, so MOE suggests you plan for them if you apply to several.
  4. Apply on the DSA-Sec Portal in the window. For the 2026 exercise it ran from 11am on 6 May to 4.30pm on 2 June 2026, with one parent's Singpass and no fee.
  5. Choose up to 3 school and talent area pairs. Two can be at the same school. Order doesn't matter.
  6. Add awards from outside school if your child has them. The portal already pulls P5 and P6 results and P4 to P6 records such as CCA from the primary school, and you can add up to 10 outside entries.
  7. Attend the school's trial or interview if your child is shortlisted. The school contacts you directly, and in 2026 schools sent every outcome by 28 August 2026.
  8. Submit up to 3 school preferences, in order, if your child has an offer. The 2026 window ran from 9am on 19 October to 4.30pm on 23 October 2026.
  9. Collect the result with the PSLE results, which MOE has tentatively set for 24 or 25 November 2026. A child without a DSA place goes through S1 Posting as usual.

The DSA-Sec calendar for 2026

MOE's May 2026 press release says this exercise is for children entering secondary school in 2027. MOE hasn't published dates for the 2027 exercise, the one for pupils now in P5. Check MOE's DSA-Sec page at the start of P6 for them.

Talent areas and the schools that take part

MOE lists seven talent groups: sports and games; visual, literary and performing arts; debate and public speaking; science, mathematics and engineering; languages and humanities; uniformed groups; and leadership. Inside those sit specific areas, from badminton and Chinese orchestra to environmental science and NPCC. Each school offers only some of them, so start from what your child loves and then find the schools.

MOE told Parliament in February 2024 that about a third of applications are in sports and games and a quarter in STEM. About 4,400 children got in through DSA-Sec in 2023, around 11% of the P6 cohort. Your child doesn't need past awards to apply: MOE says applicants without prior experience may apply, and schools can judge potential.

Most secondary schools take part. Non-IP schools can fill up to 20% of their Secondary 1 intake this way, and IP schools usually take about 30% to 35% of their IP intake. Three specialised independent schools admit only through DSA-Sec: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, School of Science and Technology, and School of the Arts, which you apply to directly. Singapore Sports School runs its own admission.

Is your child at an international school or home-schooled? Then you first get a registration number from MOE, and international students also have to meet MOE's AEIS requirements.

Offers, wait lists and what your child commits to

Each school sends one of three outcomes. Some children get offers from more than one school.

OutcomeWhat it meansWhat you do next
Confirmed OfferA reserved place at the schoolChoose the school in October and reach a PSLE score for a Posting Group it offers
Wait ListA place if children with Confirmed Offers don't take theirsChoose the school in October. MOE says about half of wait-listed pupils got a place in past years
UnsuccessfulNo DSA placeJoin S1 Posting after the PSLE results. You can still list the same school, if eligible

Confirmed Offers get priority over the wait list. If you rank a wait-listed school first and a confirmed one second, MOE says your child goes to the first school if it has room, and to the second if it doesn't.

Submitting preferences is the moment your child commits. Once allocated, they can't take part in S1 Posting or transfer after the PSLE results. They also join activities in their talent area from Secondary 1 to 4, or Year 1 to 4 of the six-year Integrated Programme. Children eligible for a third language, or for more than one Posting Group, still make those choices during S1 Posting.

The PSLE still counts. Your child needs a score that qualifies for a Posting Group the school offers, though not the school's S1 Posting cut-off. MOE's example: a school offering only Posting Group 3 needs a PSLE score of 4 to 22. An IP place needs 22 or better.

Deciding whether to apply

MOE says DSA-Sec doesn't suit every child. Talk these through with your child:

  • Would they still pick this school if the PSLE went well?
  • Do they enjoy the talent enough to keep it up for four years?
  • Can P6 schoolwork and a few trials share the same months?
  • Does the school's Posting Group fit their recent results? MOE asks you to match schools to your child's academic performance.

Applying doesn't lock anything in. If an offer arrives and your child isn't sure, don't submit preferences. MOE treats that as withdrawing, and your child goes through S1 Posting like most P6 pupils. Schools can't see where else you applied, either. If the real question is motivation for the PSLE itself, our guide to helping your child want to study picks that up.

If your child is in preschool or lower primary

There's nothing to sign up for yet. What helps later is a child who has tried a few things and kept going with the ones they like. Our enrichment classes guide covers what each age is ready for and what it costs. Sport and music have their own guides: sports classes and music classes. The enrichment budget planner keeps the spending in view.

In primary school, MOE strongly encourages a CCA, and in secondary school a CCA is compulsory. The primary record counts later. When your child applies, the DSA portal pulls their P4 to P6 records straight from school. That covers CCA and Values in Action, school awards, and National School Games entries. For sports applicants, it also sends Junior Sports Academy and National Physical Fitness Award results. Keep certificates from outside school in one folder. The portal takes up to 10 outside entries, and schools may ask for proof.

For the first school step, see our P1 registration guide. To see where the PSLE sits between primary and secondary school, read the Singapore school system explained. More school guides sit under Schools and learning.

When to get help

  • The portal won't let you in, or you have no Singpass: your child's primary school helps during the application and preference windows. For Singpass itself, MOE lists the Singpass Helpdesk at 6335 3533.
  • You can't apply online or go to the school: MOE's DSA-Sec page has a proxy form to nominate another adult.
  • You'll be overseas in October: MOE says you can switch on Singpass Overseas Access, or use the proxy form.
  • You share custody and can't agree on schools: MOE says to get a Court Order from the Family Justice Courts or the Syariah Court before the preference window opens.
  • Cost is the worry: MOE says it sets aside financial help so no child misses DSA-Sec over money, and Edusave Scholarships for Independent Schools go automatically to children who qualify.
  • Your child is anxious about trials or the PSLE: start with the form teacher. MOE names teachers as the first level of support, and they can refer your child to a school counsellor. Children aged 13 and under can call Tinkle Friend on 1800-2744-788, or National Mindline on 1771 outside its hours.
  • Anything else: MOE's contact page and its DSA-Sec FAQs.

Frequently asked questions

What is direct school admission in Singapore?

It's MOE's route into secondary school on a child's interests and potential, beyond the PSLE score. P6 pupils apply in May and June. Schools pick through trials or interviews, and places are confirmed with the PSLE results in November. A separate exercise, DSA-JC, covers junior colleges.

When does the DSA application open?

For the 2026 exercise, the DSA-Sec Portal took applications from 6 May to 2 June 2026, for entry to Secondary 1 in 2027. MOE hasn't announced dates for the 2027 exercise yet, so check its DSA-Sec page before P6 starts.

What are the DSA talent areas?

They run from sports, the arts and debate to science, languages, uniformed groups and leadership. Each school offers its own set, and SchoolFinder shows which. Your child can apply for up to 3 school and talent area pairs.

When are DSA results released?

There are two dates. Schools send their outcome by end August, which was 28 August in 2026. The final allocation comes with the PSLE results, tentatively on 24 or 25 November 2026, at the primary school or on the S1 Portal from 11.30am that day.

How do DSA and PSLE scores work together?

Your child still sits the PSLE and must score within a Posting Group the school offers. They don't need to meet the school's S1 Posting cut-off. For an IP place, MOE requires a PSLE score of 22 or better.

Can my child withdraw from DSA-Sec after an offer?

Yes, until the preference window closes. Don't submit preferences, or withdraw on the portal during the window, and your child goes into S1 Posting. Once your child is allocated a school, the place is final.
