Postnatal yoga in Singapore is safe for most mothers once your doctor clears you for exercise, usually at your postnatal review about six weeks after the birth, when HealthXchange says most pregnancy changes have settled. You don't have to wait that long to move: KKH encourages pelvic floor exercises and gentle postnatal exercise from the first days, and HealthHub lists postnatal yoga among the best ways back, for muscle relaxation, stress, mood, strength, balance and flexibility. After a caesarean, take longer; KKH says no heavy lifting for at least two months. Below is what to do at each stage, the signs to stop, and the class options here, from KKH's weekend classes to studios where babies are welcome.

When can you start postnatal yoga?

Singapore's guidelines on exercise in pregnancy, from the Perinatal Society of Singapore and KKH-led IPRAMHO, say it's essential to keep exercising after the birth. HealthHub suggests starting slowly and building up to at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. Here's how that usually looks:

StageWhat you can doSource
First days to six weeks, after a vaginal birthPelvic floor squeezes, slow breathing and short walks; KKH encourages postnatal exercise from the startKKH
After a caesareanThe same gentle start, protecting your wound; the wound can be sore for 6 to 8 weeks, and no heavy lifting for at least two monthsHealthXchange, KKH
From your postnatal review, about six weeks, with your doctor's OKA postnatal yoga class, starting with gentle sessionsHealthXchange, HealthHub
As you get strongerLonger classes and more strength work, towards 150 minutes of activity a weekHealthHub, IPRAMHO

Check with your doctor before starting if you're unsure, HealthHub advises, and don't exercise on a day you feel unwell. If you had a hard birth, heavy bleeding or a caesarean, ask at your postnatal review when a class is right for you.

Gentle moves by recovery stage

A good postnatal class starts with breath and the pelvic floor and builds from there. KKH teaches pelvic floor squeezes as a hold of three seconds and a relax of three, building up to ten seconds, and that's the base for everything else.

StageMoves a postnatal class usually starts withLeave for later
Weeks 1 to 6Slow belly breathing with a pelvic floor squeeze on the out-breath; shoulder and neck rolls to undo feeding posture; ankle circles in bedAny class, sit-ups, anything that strains your stitches or wound
From your postnatal reviewCat-cow on hands and knees, child's pose, a gentle supported bridge, side-lying stretchesDeep twists, holding the boat pose, inversions, jumping
Stronger, a few months onLonger flows, standing balances, gentle core work if your tummy muscles have come togetherHot yoga until you're well recovered and your doctor agrees

Two things are worth checking before you push your core. If you leak urine when you cough or laugh, or feel heaviness in your pelvis, see a women's health physiotherapist; KKH's physiotherapists teach postnatal pelvic floor exercises and SGH runs a postnatal assessment service for mothers at risk of bladder problems. And if your tummy still bulges in a ridge down the middle when you sit up, tell your instructor and doctor before doing core work. Our guide to pelvic floor recovery explains the exercises, and caesarean recovery covers the wound.

Stop and tell your teacher if you feel unwell during a class, HealthHub says. See a doctor for bleeding that gets heavier again, pain at your wound or stitches, or dizziness.

How to choose a postnatal yoga class

Bring

Pick a time around your baby's naps rather than across one, and a studio close to home, so getting there doesn't take the energy you meant for the class. If you're choosing between yoga and Pilates, our guide to postnatal Pilates compares when each suits you, and prenatal yoga covers the months before the birth. For the bigger picture of the first weeks, see our tips for new mums.

This guide is general information and can't replace advice from your doctor or physiotherapist. Check with your doctor before starting exercise after birth, especially after a caesarean or a complicated delivery.

Frequently asked questions

When can I start postnatal yoga?

Gentle breathing and pelvic floor exercises can start in the first days. Most mothers join a class after their postnatal review, about six weeks after the birth, once their doctor agrees.

Can I do yoga after a caesarean?

Yes, once your doctor clears you, often later than after a vaginal birth. HealthXchange says a caesarean wound can be sore for 6 to 8 weeks, and KKH says no heavy lifting for at least two months.

Can I bring my baby to postnatal yoga in Singapore?

Some classes welcome babies, such as Mother & Child's Bumps & Baby Yoga in Tanglin. Ask the studio before you book, and check you can stop to feed.

What are the benefits of postnatal yoga?

HealthHub lists muscle relaxation, stress management, better mood, strength, balance and flexibility. Regular activity also supports weight management after the birth.

Is postnatal yoga or Pilates better?

Both are on HealthHub's list of good exercise after birth. Yoga leans towards relaxation and flexibility, while HealthHub says modified Pilates helps posture and strengthens the pelvic floor and tummy muscles. Pick the one you'll keep doing.
