Dance and ballet classes for kids in Singapore: ages, grades and prices
In this article
Dance and ballet classes for kids in Singapore can start at 2 and a half, the youngest age in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) pre-school curriculum. Graded ballet comes later: RAD's first class award is for 5 year olds, and Grade 1 starts at 7. Community club classes in other styles list their own starting ages on onePA, from 3 for Chinese dance to 6 for Bharatanatyam. On the onePA pages we read on 6 Nov 2026, a term cost $120 to $260.
How to choose a dance class, step by step
- Start with the style your child already copies at home, whether that's ballet, a street style like hip hop or K-pop, or a cultural dance such as Chinese or Malay dance.
- Match the class to your child's age: RAD says its Dance to Your Own Tune curriculum covers ages 2 and a half to 5, and its Pre-Primary in Dance class award starts at 5.
- Check the lesson length and group size, since the onePA classes we read ran 45 to 90 minutes and a Bharatanatyam class at Tampines North CC takes 6 to 15 children.
- Ask what the teacher is trained to teach; for RAD ballet, only an RAD Registered Teacher can enter your child for an exam.
- Book a trial and stay to watch for a warm-up before the steps, as that Bharatanatyam class opens with 10 minutes of one.
- Before you pay, ask for every extra cost, because two Dance Avenue ballet classes on onePA charge new students $100 for the uniform and shoes.
- Read the refund terms first: onePA's listings say fees aren't refunded once paid unless the class is cancelled or rescheduled.
- If the studio enters children for RAD exams, ask whether yours can sit them out, since RAD also runs demonstration classes with no marks and class awards that give only a broad view of standard.
- Give the class a full term, then ask your child if they want to go back; if not, try a different style next term.
What each age is ready for
Ballet ages below come from RAD. Ages for the other styles come from the onePA listings we read, so another class in the same style may take a slightly different age band.
| Age | Style that suits | What a class looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 2 and a half to 5 | RAD's Dance to Your Own Tune | Short, themed classes. An RAD demonstration class runs 30 to 45 minutes |
| 3 to 6 | Chinese dance | Basic movements, working on balance and flexibility |
| 4 to 8 | K-pop for beginners | Body isolation and waving moves, at high energy |
| 5 | RAD Pre-Primary in Dance | First ballet class award, led by the teacher |
| 5 to 10 | Hip hop | Body isolation and coordination |
| 6 and up | RAD Primary in Dance, Bharatanatyam | First RAD exam. Bharatanatyam: warm-up, then steps and hand gestures |
| 7 and up | RAD Grades 1 to 5 | Ballet technique, with character dance from Grade 1 |
| 11 and up | RAD Grades 6 to 8 | Higher graded exams, each with a minimum age of 11 |
For babies and toddlers younger than 2 and a half, our music classes guide covers parent-and-child music and movement. If your child would rather tumble than follow steps, read the gymnastics guide.
RAD ballet grades and exams in Singapore
RAD writes the syllabus and sets a minimum age for every level, but your child's studio picks when to enter them. Graded exams run from Primary to Grade 8. Pass one and your child gets a certificate and a medal.
Exams are optional. RAD offers class awards from Pre-Primary in Dance, which your child's teacher runs while an examiner assesses the class. Pre-schoolers can do a demonstration class instead, where the examiner watches and gives no marks at all. RAD says these options are for children who aren't ready for exam pressure.
Exam fees are extra to class fees. RAD's 2026 fee list for Singapore charges S$114 to S$123 a candidate for the Primary in Dance exam. A Pre-Primary in Dance class award costs S$69 to S$79, and a demonstration class S$49 to S$54.
Dance at school: CCAs and SYF
MOE sorts CCAs into 4 groups, and dance sits in Visual and Performing Arts. MOE says a CCA is strongly encouraged at primary level and compulsory in secondary school.
School dance groups perform at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation. MOE's 2026 schedule lists Malay, Chinese, Indian and International dance in the primary-level Arts Presentation, which ran from 30 March to 30 April 2026.
Each school runs its own set of CCAs, so ask your child's school which dance groups it has. For where CCAs fit in the wider system, see how the school system works. For the year before school starts, read getting ready for Primary 1.
Prices providers publish, in alphabetical order

What to wear and how to look after growing bodies
Check the studio's uniform rule before the first lesson. The Dance Avenue listings name the set: leotard, skirt, ballet shoes and stockings. For hip hop and K-pop, pack water and clothes your child can sweat in. The K-pop listing calls its class high energy.
Dance counts toward daily movement. KKH's guidelines ask pre-schoolers aged 3 to under 7 for at least 180 minutes of physical activity a day, and they encourage daily outdoor play. So a weekly class adds to play time. Our guides to preschools with outdoor play and active play by age have ideas for the rest of the week.
KKH's page on sports injuries in children describes knee and heel pain from irritated growth plates, and says the knee problems usually show up during periods of rapid growth. If your child limps or rubs a heel after class, tell the teacher and get it checked.
If your child loves the stage more than the steps, speech and drama classes may suit them. A child who would rather draw than dance has art classes to try.
When to get help
- Pain after class that keeps coming back, or a limp: see your GP or a polyclinic. KKH runs a team that treats sports injuries in children.
- Your child dreads class and won't say why: talk to the teacher first. Primary school children aged 13 and below can also call Tinkle Friend on 1800-2744-788, Monday to Friday, 2.30pm to 5pm.
- Your child has additional needs: ask the studio how it adapts lessons, and read our guide to enrichment for children with special needs. RAD has a policy for reasonable adjustments in its exams.
- A dispute with a private studio over fees or a refund: CASE takes disputes through its online form and says its officers reply within 5 working days.
- A question about a school dance CCA: ask the form teacher or the teacher in charge of the CCA, and read MOE's CCA overview.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find dance classes for kids in Singapore?
Community clubs list classes on onePA, with the dates and price on each listing before you pay. Private studios run their own terms, so ask for a trial class before you commit to a full term. Primary schools run dance CCAs too, so check what your child's school offers.
What age to start ballet?
RAD's pre-school curriculum takes children from 2 and a half to 5. The Pre-Primary in Dance class award has a minimum age of 5, the Primary in Dance exam 6, and Grade 1 is 7. Start when your child can follow a short group class. The grades can wait.
Is there ballet for toddlers in Singapore?
RAD's youngest curriculum starts at 2 and a half. Before that, look at parent-and-child music and movement classes, which our music classes guide covers. They teach rhythm and moving to music with you beside your toddler.
How much are ballet classes for kids in Singapore?
Community club ballet terms on onePA cost $121 to $260 when we read them on 6 Nov 2026, for 8 to 11 lessons of 45 minutes. Add the uniform, which one provider charges new students $100 for. If your child sits an RAD exam, Primary in Dance costs S$114 to S$123 in 2026.
Are hip hop classes for kids OK for a 5 year old?
Yes, if the class is set up for that age. The onePA hip hop class we read takes children aged 5 to 10 and starts with body isolation and coordination. A K-pop class at Tampines Changkat CC takes beginners from 4 to 8. Ask whether 5 year olds dance with much older children.
Does my child have to take ballet exams?
No. RAD's exams are optional, and it offers class awards and demonstration classes for children who aren't ready for exam pressure. Ask the studio whether exam classes and non-exam classes run separately.
